Our service area stretches across more than 60,000 square miles of rural and urban terrain in both North Dakota and Minnesota. We have offices in Fargo, Grand Forks, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Thief River Falls, Bismarck, Valley City, Jamestown, Devils Lake, and Minot.

Volunteers provide critical support for our day-to-day work while changing lives and truly making a difference in their communities. Whether spending time with patients, sewing bears or giving a haircut, volunteers are an essential part of the Hospice team. We have more than 400 devoted volunteers of all ages and backgrounds throughout our service area. They all have one thing in common: a desire to help others and give back.

Interview hospice patients one-on-one and record their memories, experiences, and wisdom. Create a lasting legacy book, a tangible piece of someone’s life to be cherished by their loved ones for a lifetime.

We understand that everyone has different availability. Volunteer visits are scheduled based on patient needs and your personal availability, so whether you can give a few hours a week or a couple times a month, your time makes a difference.

No medical experience needed. We provide thorough training and ongoing support. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Volunteers spend time with patients by sharing interests, reading, listening to music, and being present so they’re not alone. We ask a minimum of 30 minutes either weekly or 2-3 visits per month.

Do you have every Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 11am-3pm available? Perhaps you have an extra Monday, Wednesday, or Friday off and want to volunteer spontaneously? Either way, the United Way could use your help!

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning between 11am-3pm food donations need to be picked up from Insomnia Cookies and Chick-fil-A and brought to one of our partner agencies in the Bismarck community. This task typically takes about 45 minutes and does NOT require a large vehicle. Volunteers must be able to lift twenty pounds though as the donation bags can get quite full. 

If you sign up for this opportunity, please come to the United Way office at 515 N 4th Street in Bismarck around 11AM to first pick up the food donation cooler bags and partner agency directions prior to going to Insomnia Cookies and Chick-fil-A for the food pick-up and delivery!

Provide joy to hospice patients and their families through pet therapy. Pete certification and vaccination are required. Love on a leash can provide licensure to pet. 

Sanford Hospice is looking for professional photographers to capture portraits of our patients and their families. Volunteers may also be asked to attend special events such as Veteran Pinning Ceremonies to photograph patients and provide them a document of the day. These photos are a treasure to a hospice family. Must have your own equipment. 

As part of the We Honor Veterans Program, we are looing for veterans who would like to visit with our veteran patients. Many veterans receiving hospice care appreciate connecting with volunteers who are also veterans, even if they served in a different time or place. 

Hospice Volunteers can help by staying with the patient while their caregivers take care of necessary errands. Caregivers also appreciate a visit from a compassionate friend who understands what they are going through. 

Music therapy creates an environment that reduces stress and anxiety while connecting patients to their favorite memories. Share your talents either through song or musical instruments to enhance our patients quality of life. Music therapy can be done in the patient's home or a hospice location. 

Many hospice patients are unable to leave home to go to a salon or barbershop to get a haircut. We need licensed cosmologists or barbers who can provide styling or haircuts to patients in their homes.

United Way’s Adopt-A-Classroom brings a ray of positive light to kids who need it. The program connects community volunteers with elementary school classrooms in high-poverty schools. Currently volunteers can mentor students at Myhre Elementary in Bismarck. We ask for a minimum of a one-hour commitment twice a month. Interested? Sign up HERE.

The students’ faces light up when volunteers from Women United arrive. These classroom visits are a time when the kids get the attention they crave, but don’t often get at home. By simply reading a book together, doing crafts, or eating with the children, the volunteers help the students grow academically and as citizens.

Indeed, a little effort from a few people can make a big impact.

Girl Scouts is about providing copious amounts of experiences including camping. Girls have the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a whole new way. As a camp volunteer, you’ll assist girls in reaching new levels and learning new skills. Similar to all other Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons’ volunteer opportunities, volunteering for camp is according to your availability and interests. We put volunteers in roles according to your skills and interests. If you’re unsure about a certain topic, a camp director is always there to answer any questions you may have!

Every girl, from our youngest to our oldest, has the ability to lead.  As a Troop Co-Leader, you will be providing our girls the free and safe environment they need to pursue whatever interests, causes, and leadership roles are most important to them.  With your support, girls will stand up, stand out, and stand tall.

We are always looking for individuals and groups to volunteer at the Bismarck Regional Service Center.  Here, we repack bulk product into senior food boxes, or single servings to be distributed statewide.

United Way’s Parents United brings a ray of positive light to families of young children who need it. The program advances the common good through topics such as financial stability, health and wellness education in the area's highest-poverty school. The United Way Backpack Program occurs every other week during the August - May school year. It currently feeds 1,600+ children in the Bismarck and Mandan school districts during each backpacking event. 

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting with this program! There are multiple positions which include:

We do a variety of things to help people in need. Some people just need a fun thing to do on a Saturday afternoon, others need help with house upkeep or it could be something else. The Red Cross supports community disaster resiliency through three unique programs: Youth Preparedness, Adult Preparedness, and Sound the Alarm. Heartview is holding various events in 2023, including a golf tournament and Halloween 5K. Event committee members would assist with door prize solicitation, event planning, and day-of volunteering. Ongoing commitment is limited to 1-3 hours per month.

The Burleigh County Senior Adults Program is seeing record numbers of senior citizens needing home delivered meals.  Therefore, we are in desperate need of volunteers to deliver meals and do a wellness check to home-bound senior citizens in the Bismarck Community. 

This volunteer job is a 1 ½ to 2 hour commitment each time you deliver meals.
10-10:30 am: Arrive at the Burleigh County Senior Center
Drive assigned route (12-15 homes)
Return to Senior Center with tubs and report any issues to HDM
Coordinator.

We are able to work with any schedule! We deliver Monday through Friday. Choose one route a week, one or two a month, or be on our substitute list to fill in when needed – whatever works for you!

Drivers will need to use their own vehicle. We do provide mileage reimbursement at .60/mile.
Covid-19 precautions have been taken. Drivers are provided masks, hand sanitizer and gloves.

North Dakota Adult & Teen Challenge holds many upcoming events and activities. We need charismatic volunteers who enjoy talking with people to work side-by-side with our Director of Development.

Do you love hearing incredible stories? Do you like to meet people from other cultures, who were born across the world? 

Global Neighbors partners American mentors with New American individuals or families to share language, culture, and friendship. Depending on your preferences and abilities, and as well as those of the New American(s) you are matched with, a mentor might tutor English, explain American culture, introduce a new person to Bismarck, practice driving or study the driver's manual, search for jobs/apartments and complete applications, cook new food together, learn about other cultures and languages, take hikes, garden, play sports, or make a new lifelong friend.

We ask our mentors to share just 1 hour a week, for a 6-month period, with their mentee. We also ask all of our mentors to pay for and undergo a basic background check. There is no cost for the New American mentees.

Previous mentors have said "I love mentoring because it's like taking my kids on an international mission every week", and "I love sharing language and learning about other cultures." Mentors discover so much about themselves and North Dakota while getting to know their new neighbors.

Dakota Cares needs an immediate need for a social media specialist to update our website, Facebook and Twitter presence. If interested, an on-going social media position is available. Work remotely or in the office. Hours are flexible.

We are looking for help in sorting donations that come into our thrift store. All abilities are welcome. 

Conduct regular Cub Scout program meetings in after-school settings utilizing program outlines provided for you. The number and frequency of the program meetings are tailored to meet the volunteers and school needs. We work hard to find volunteers or paid staff that will work with the same kids and school for a full semester or hopefully a school year.

Program aids will receive training and expect to conduct the program meetings in a manner that promotes a safe learning environment and behavior conducive with the Scout Oath and Law. They are to ensure Youth Protection Guidelines are followed, including two-deep leadership requirement for all meetings and outings.

Possible activities include reading to student, correcting worksheet, etc.

Meals on Wheels substitute drivers are in demand. Backups will fill-in for regular volunteer drivers when they are not available. Meals are delivered between 10:45 a.m. and noon. This is a great opportunity to help ease hunger in our community and brighten the day of a local senior.
