The United Way Backpack Program occurs every other week during the August - May school year. It currently feeds 1,600+ children in the Bismarck and Mandan school districts during each backpacking event.
We are looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting with this program! There are multiple positions which include:
- Food Delivery Driver: Before the backpacking can begin, we need volunteers who can pick up the food from the grocery store and bring it to our packing location. To do this, you must have a full bed pickup! Currently, there is six pallets of food that need to be transported before the backpacking can begin.
- Backpack Packer/Organizer: This volunteer role is responsible for properly packing the backpacks with food as well as assisting to keep the area clean, and the food stocked. Volunteers at this time also fill the totes with food according to label stickers, to help the delivery drivers stay organized.
- Delivery Driver: This is our biggest need; you must have a full bed pickup or very large SUV! The role of delivery driver is to pick up totes filled with packed backpacks, load and unload them from your own vehicle, deliver them according to route sheets to specific schools, and then return the empty totes to the United Way office.
If you are interested in aiding us in any of these areas, please respond to this need and we will contact you when a volunteer opportunity date and time arises!
